Interview: Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X
FCP product manager Tom McDonald on the future of video on OS X
by David Nagel, Executive Producer
Last week Apple introduced the first professional-level video editing system for Mac OS X--Final Cut Pro 3.0. They also very quietly showed off DVD Studio Pro running on OS X. Final Cut Pro 3 will be the first version of FCP to offer real-time effects in software only--on desktop models ranging from 500 MHz and upwards and PowerBook models running at 667 MHz.

Merry OS X-mas
Apple products and apps make holidays worthwhile
by Stephen Schleicher
I really want a Mac.Many of you are probably surprised at that statement. I’m sure Digital Media Net Executive Producer David Nagel is still in shock over that proclamation. After all, if you have been following all of my columns over the years you know I haven’t been the most outspoken proponent of the Mac, especially when I have three PCs (or peecee for you Macheads) sitting in my home office and a Windows laptop that goes with me in all my worldly travels.

Talkin' Smack: The Days of Wine and OSes
How this year's DV Expo kicked off the Golden Age of the Mac
by David Nagel, Executive Producer
Leave it to me to skip out on the most significant event of the year. But who would have thunk it? Last year's DV Expo, to put it mildly, was a drag. And every single expo of 2001--including Macworld--was an equal drag. Nothing really great coming out. No tremendous leaps in technology. Basically, nothing of interest. So I decided to sit out this year's DV Expo, expecting much of the same. And then--BAM--everything changed.

QuarkXPress 5.0 Coming in the Next Few Weeks
Upgrade promotion offers $150 discount
by David Nagel
QuarkXPress 5.0 will be released within the next few weeks. The information came out in a technical e-mail from the company today. Quark had not previously announced an actual ship date for the full version of QuarkXPress 5. The page layout program went into beta back in September.

Boris Calligraphy: First OS X-Native Titler
Final Cut Pro generators offer 2D and 3D effects
by David Nagel
Boris FX has introduced the first titling software to run natively in Mac OS X--Boris Calligraphy. The new software suite is a set of two title generators for the recently announced Final Cut Pro 3.0, and it will actually be included for free with Final Cut Pro 3.0, which is scheduled to ship at the end of the month. The software right now runs on both OS X and OS 9. Boris says that, in addition to Calligraphy, its entire product line will be brought over to Mac OS X in early 2002, including Boris RED and Graffiti. The company will be announcing special upgrade prices for Final Cut Pro 3 users who want to take advantage of some of the more advanced features offered in the company's retail product line.
