Using variables to streamline design work
Some design tasks are tedious and repetitive (like creating dozens of related Web banners or designing business cards for 800 employees). With data-driven graphics, Adobe Illustrator 10.0 lets designers and developers collaborate to generate highly formatted graphics automatically. In this new workflow, designers focus their time and talent on designing, rather than cutting and pasting, and developers control the links between a template and its content. You know I love each and every one of you. However, as wonderful and physically attractive as you all are, you're also nuts. I reached this conclusion a very short time after publishing last week's Talkin' Smack column, in which I--or rather one of my many assistants who wrote that opinion for me--made a few negative comments about Apple's upgrade policy with regard to Mac OS X.

When Apple introduced its burner software as part of the OS, many people thought that it meant the end of Toast. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Apple’s burner is very easy to use but it imposes some serious limitations. The worst, in my opinion, is the inability to burn multi-session CDs. It also limits the DVD author because it doesn’t let you create mixed-mode DVDs, only video or data ones.
New version expands authoring capabilities

Macromedia announced today that it's shipping Flash MX, the latest incarnation of the company's multimedia authoring tool. According to Macromedia, the latest release is designed not only for creative content on the Web, but also for application development. It will also be Macromedia's second content creation tool to operate natively under Mac OS X.
A closer look at new creative tools

Last week we began our in depth examination of new creative tools in Adobe Photoshop 7. We left off at the midpoint of the new Photoshop paint engine, which includes drastically improved parameters for creating brush strokes and painterly effects. So now we'll finish up with the paint engine and get into some more of the dynamics available for creating your paint strokes.
