![]() Modifying path-based objects by David Nagel A goodly number of Photoshop users out there haven't quite taken to working with paths. Photoshop has always been about raster images, and, for those without experience in illustration programs, path tools can be a little confusing. They all look the same, and their functions can sometimes seem elusive. ![]() Professional-level page layout and design system by David Nagel A little history. Way back in the days of covered wagons and dinosaurs, I went and applied for a job at my college newspaper. The newspaper had just switched from a typesetting system to this newfangled "Aldus PageMaker" system running on Macintosh Plus computers using an Apple Laserwriter for output. (As I recall, the whole system was powered by a Triceratops running on a treadmill.) We applied halftones manually to our photos with the big photostat camera, and, of course, we used a waxer and paste-up boards for the final layout. It got the job done.
Why I'm off DSL and back to cable by David Nagel By this point you all know me as a reasonable man, one not prone to outbursts of emotion or spurious logic. Perhaps you see me as a peacemaker, one whose aim is always to promote harmony and spread joy among users of technology in all of its forms. Or perhaps you see me as a cool stoic--a philosopher king who's unfazed by the world's troubles. But deep within my cool, slender, handsome exterior I am, fundamentally, just a man, one prone to the same perturbations of the mind as any of you. ![]() Using variables to streamline design work Some design tasks are tedious and repetitive (like creating dozens of related Web banners or designing business cards for 800 employees). With data-driven graphics, Adobe Illustrator 10.0 lets designers and developers collaborate to generate highly formatted graphics automatically. In this new workflow, designers focus their time and talent on designing, rather than cutting and pasting, and developers control the links between a template and its content. Follow along and learn how you can use data-driven graphics to streamline the design process. ImageModeler, SceneWe@ver targeted for June by David Nagel RealViz says it will bring its entire product line to Mac OS X in stages by the end of the year. The company makes several applications in the areas of 3D, including Stitcher, which is already available for OS X, as well as MatchMover, ReTimer, ImageModeler and SceneWeaver. I had a chance to meet today with two representatives from RealViz, who outlined plans for their Mac rollout. |
