![]() Dual G4 1 GHz versus the G4 933 MHz by David Nagel I'm one of those people who always needs to have the latest and best the Macintosh platform has to offer. I need it for my professional work, and I also need it because ... well ... I'm a Mac psychofanatic, and few things get me amped up like a fine piece of hardware or software being added to my increasingly unmanageable collection of fine pieces of hardware and software. Technology enables networking through ASIO by David Nagel Steinberg says its new VST System Link Technology will be making its way into software beginning this quarter. VST System Link is a networking system designed to work through ASIO with VST-based software to allow multiple machines to operate together and to allow multiple operators to work on a single project. The technology is cross-platform and cross-application.
![]() Apple's Final Cut Pro 3 By Matt Payne Apple’s Final Cut Pro has gained a large following, and version 3’s performance increases will go a long way toward satisfying even the most demanding customers.New for Final Cut Pro 3 are native OS X support, real-time dissolves, wipes, iris effects, real-time motion effects and real-time color correction. Final Cut Pro 3 also incorporates a new offline format that captures lower resolution files that are not good for final output—but are good for editing hours of material when disk space is limited—on your PowerBook, for example. An EDL can be generated and the trimmed clips recaptured at higher resolution later. ![]() Nicely Designed, Inside and Out by Charlie White Here's a review of Apple's most powerful Mac G4 workstation to date, the Dual 1GHz Power Mac G4. We've had it in our Midwest Test Facility for the past month, putting it through its paces and experimenting with all aspects of it. We love Macs around here, and this new G4 machine didn't disappoint us at all. That's not to say we didn't find anything wrong with it, though. It's fast, but not as fast as Apple would like you to think it is. And oh, that 22" Apple Cinema display? Nothing short of absolutely beautiful, even though it will run you an extra $2500. Here's our clear-eyed, unbiased, straight talkin' review. ![]() We're in this for you! By Charlie White Many times, readers send me email, wanting to know how I review software and hardware, how I make editorial decisions, what kind of relationship I have with our advertisers, and whether I am beholden to anybody. Sometimes, if I write an article or editorial that a reader disagrees with, I'll be accused of being bought by one manufacturer or another. The following editorial explains what influence vendors and readers have over what I do, how I decide what to write about, and for whom I write. |
