Adjusting settings to maximize your frame rate
As we've written in our reviews here at DMN, Discreet's Combustion 2 brings a level of compositing power to the desktop that was simply not available at this price before. But you will surely notice when you first use it on a Mac that the display performance isn't terribly great, especially when you're using the program's flashiest feature--particle effects. But the program can produce excellent display performance if you just know where to change the settings.

Continuing along in our series of photographic compositing techniques, this week we begin a new segment on water effects in Adobe Photoshop. We have, so far, discussed masking, depth of field and atmospheric volume. To these we now add a technique for compositing bodies of water onto images.

How to create multi-tiered menus and integrate them into your Web page
One of the great new features in Fireworks MX is its ability to generate horizontal and vertical interactive menus for display on the Web. The previous release of Fireworks had a similar feature, but it had virtually insurmountable problems, and so it was useless. In the new release, menu creation is not only easy, but it's also completely functional--a nice bonus feature for those who don't like to waste time creating things that don't work right.

The book offers a series of 'Hands-on' mini-tutorials that illustrate different ways to create various effects in Photoshop. While no substitute for thw many Photoshop books that teach you all sorts of different effects, it at least offers a nice start.
