Updated effects filters for compositing and motion graphics applications
A couple months ago we took a look at Tinderbox 3 from The Foundry. Tinderbox 3, like its predecessors, is a professional-level set of effects plugins for motion graphics packages like Adobe After Effects and compositing packages like Discreet Combustion. Since our first review, the software has not received an overall version upgrade, but it has received two important enhancements that cause me to reevaluate the software and bump my rating up a bit.

Alien Skin has made a name for itself over the years with effects plugins for Adobe Photoshop and After Effects, including Eye Candy, Xenofex and, most recently, Splat! In fact, you might even say the company itself has become something of a cult figure among Photoshop enthusiasts, particularly those masses out there (including myself) who are avid Photoshop filter collectors and flash their Alien Skin memorabilia as if they were collector items, which, hopefully for me, they will be some day....

How to create new document presets
When you create a new document in Adobe Photoshop, are you bothered that you can't simply open up a preset for an image format you commonly use? I mean, let's say you work almost exclusively with one particular image size--maybe a widescreen DV resolution or a custom size for laying out quarter-page magazine ads or some such. But every time you want to create a new document, you have to enter the dimensions and resolution manually. Here's a simple way to solve this problem.

Ever have Final Cut Pro 3.0 crash in the middle of an edit, and you don’t know when the last auto save was performed (or even where it is located)? Wonder why you can easily locate your rendered video files, but not your audio? Ever throw your hands up in frustration and cry out in the night, "I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!"? Okay, maybe you haven’t gone that far, but knowing how to set up your scratch disk can save you some hassle later on.
