Apples to Apples II: Dualies and Droolies
Performance benchmarks for the current G4 lineup

Everything about the current lineup of Macintosh G4s should make them at least mildly superior to the previous lineup of desktop G4s ... in theory, anyway. They have faster chips, dual processors all around, faster bus speeds and, of course, DDR memory. And those are only the obvious advantages. But does theory hold up to practice in the Mac universe? We tested the entire lineup of current G4s--from the dual 867 MHz G4 to the dual 1.25 GHz G4--against the previous generation and found some fascinating results.

Interactive QuickTime Authoring, Part 3
Is LiveStage Professional Totally Hip?

We're going to turn our attention this time to a program that doesn't just enlist QuickTime as part of a larger interactive authoring solution, it makes QuickTime itself the entire interactive authoring solution, exporting fully interactive .mov files, ready for playback in the QuickTime player on Macintosh or Windows. The guilty party? Totally Hip's LiveStage Professional 4.

Talkin' Smack: The Viable Notebook, Phase 2
New PowerBooks with another creative edge

In the long-ago, far-away epoch before the advent of DV and FireWire, notebook computers were good for one thing: showing your friends and colleagues that you had enough money to afford one. Those of us wizened enough to remember all the way back to, say, the 1990s recall (as best we can in our senility) machines that could run little more than word processing programs, though many of us certainly did try to integrate them into our professional work. (Believe it or not, I was an editor putting out a weekly print magazine on a PowerBook Duo 210. It didn't last long ... the Duo, that is.)

Making It Look Like Film
Tweak your video for surprising results

Everyone wants their video to look more like film. There is no way to make your video look exactly like film because of the inherent differences between the two media, but with some tweaking, you can emulate the look of film transferred to video. This tutorial discusses five tips for shooting on DV to make it more film-like.
