Dual brush dynamics
Last time around in our exploration of the Photoshop Paint Engine, we looked at methods for creating custom brush tip shapes using paint tools and filters. Now we'll begin a new section covering paint brush dynamics, a set of features that help to make the Paint Engine in Photoshop 7 far superior to anything seen in Photoshop previously for creating custom brushes for emulating "natural" media (as if chemical-based paints were any more natural than digital paint tools).

This week's free software download takes us into an area probably new to a lot of you--Studio Artist from Synthetik Software. Studio Artist is a painting, rotoscoping and animation package with probably the most sophisticated and versatile paint engine available. Our package this week includes 55 presets for this application covering image processing and drawing tools.

Using custom distortion objects to create a crumple effect
Today we break from our adventure in freeform painting and stop over for a quiet visit in the more genteel realm of vector illustration. And by that I mean Adobe Illustrator country, where a line is a line and a fill is a fill, and nothing unexpected ever happens that can't be undone ... or so folks around these parts would like you to believe. But does Illustrator country have a dark, messy secret these genteel folks are trying to cover up in order to maintain orderly appearances?
Charcoal, chalk, conte and crayon
Response to our first series of brushes for Adobe Photoshop 7 was so positive that I couldn't help but create a second set. Rather than focusing on specific applicators, as I did in the previous series, this week I decided to create a set of brushes (Nagel Series 2 Brushes) that hopefully do a decent job of emulating some of my favorite natural media: charcoal, chalk, conte crayon and wax crayon.
