When Apple announced the new 1 GHz G4 PowerBook last month, I instantly posted an editorial proclaiming it the greatest boon to mobile creative professionals since the advent of color LCD displays. We'll get into the reasons below. But now that I've had the machine all to myself for a while, do I stand by my initial assessment? Yes I do.
Part 1: An introduction to Time Particles
It's a sheer act of willpower that I get any writing done at all here at DMN. If I were to succumb to my temptations, I would hook myself up to life support, strap on a colostomy sack and play with Synthetik Studio Artist until I died of sleep deprivation. They'd find my skeletal corpse draped over my Wacom tablet, and, after they'd scraped the dried, applesauce-like goo off my mouth, they'd discover an expression on my face at once felicitous and manic. Here's one of the reasons why.
75 displacement effects and time particles
As with all things Studio Artist, I started off this collection of presets in one direction and found myself following another, winding up with a wide variety of somewhat indefinable brushes that can be roughly termed "displacement effects." The collection--Nagel Series 2 Paint Patches--includes a whopping 75 brushes, ranging from simple interactive pens to autodraw brushes to time particles.
Using the Release to Layers functions to generate animated SWF files
One of the features that's often overlooked in Adobe Illustrator 10 is its ability to generate Flash animations. The process is not a complicated one, but using tools included in Illustrator--and even some third-party plugins--you can use Illustrator to generate morphing logos and text, swirling graphics, ripple effects and a whole range of animations ranging from the simple to the complex.
