Ships After Effects 5New version gets 3D compositing Adobe today announced it has started shipping After Effects 5, a major upgrade to its compositing software. The new version includes dramatic changes from AE 4.1, though the changes are designed to remain in the background until the user chooses to employ them. Chief among these changes is 3D compositing—the ability to manipulate layers and layer data in 3D, including layer intersections, for adding shadows and other effects. The 3D compositing features are activated on a layer by layer basis by clicking a box in the timeline. Leaving the 3D features deactivated on 2D layers will speed up rendering, while also leaving these layers unaffected by camera or lighting animation. TUTORIAL Digital
WashesAdding wetness and tint to your canvas in Studio Artist This week we're back to Synthetik Studio Artist to take a look at another one of those features that makes this program unique, namely the ability to use media that interact with one another like liquids. Those of you with natural media backgrounds, particularly life drawing, are familiar enough with washes and the great ways they can interact with dry media like charcoal or Conté. I can remember in my art school using everything from watered-down Dr. Martin inks applied with a rag to transmission fluid applied with a very expensive sable brush. (In retrospect, maybe I should have done things the other way around.) OPINION Talkin' Smack: It Keeps Going ... Even your own humble editor—me—will often find difficult going when I stray from the path of nonsensical Microsoft bashing and move into the unmapped territory of thoughtful analysis of the Macintosh platform.
